Chinese Branded Vendors' Role in Bolstering Taiwanese Camera Module Shipments Becoming Increasingly Important.

Orders from branded vendors in the United States and Europe are still the major sources of revenue for Taiwanese camera module makers. However, with more and more Chinese branded vendors releasing orders to Taiwanese manufacturers, they will become an important growth factor for the Taiwanese camera module industry.

Chinese mobile phone branded vendors purchase camera modules mainly from Chinese makers. The newly entered Chinese camera module makers have obtained outsourcing orders from Chinese branded vendors, taking advantage of their production flexibility and price competitiveness. Nevertheless, Chinese makers are still lagging behind Taiwanese peers in terms of technological capabilities, and Chinese makers' shipments are mainly constituted by 5MP and under models. With the possession of advanced technology, Taiwanese makers have secured a lot of high-end orders for 8MP and higher models from Chinese vendors. Driven by the growth in shipment volume of Chinese branded mobile phones, 8MP and higher models' share in total Taiwanese camera module shipments also rose in the first half of 2013. According to Nina Ko, an industry analyst at MIC (Market Intelligence and Consulting Institute), an ICT industry research institute based in Taipei, as mobile phone camera pixels continue to improve, the share of mobile phones equipped with 8MP models also increases. Thanks to manufacturing orders outsourced by Chinese companies, the shipment share of 8MP and higher models jumped to 16.6% in the first half of 2013, up from 8.3% in the same period of last year; due to the decreasing prices, 8MP and higher models have replaced 5MP ones. In the second half of 2013, 8MP models are expected to be widespread used in mid-range mobile phones.
